What is laser engraving?

Laser engraving is a cutting-edge technology that uses a high-powered laser to engrave a logo, image or design on different types of materials including textile, wood, metal, aluminum, stainless steel, leather and glass, to name a few.

Fast and precise, laser engraving offers a high-quality finish where the smallest detail is rendered with precision.

And how does it work?

In laser engraving, the latter heats the material so much that it evaporates or burns, since the laser beam hits specific points with such great energy that heat is generated helping to vaporize the material. Depending on the duration of exposure to the laser beam, the color changes and a more or less pronounced color contrast can then be observed. The result of the engraving is very resistant to abrasion and is therefore permanent.

What can you engrave more precisely?

The flat engraving surface of our equipment is 18“ x 24”, but elliptical, spherical, curved and conical surfaces can also be engraved. Please note that the maximum height of items we can accept is 10”, and that we laser engrave 12 units or more.

So whether you want to engrave clothing such as coats, toques, bibs, sweaters, caps and much more, or promotional accessories such as pens, glasses, key rings, mugs or thermoses (without handles) and many more, the only limit is your imagination!

How is the cost of laser engraving calculated?

Calculating the cost of laser engraving is quite simple: It will be set according to the number of items to be engraved, in addition to considering the graphic design of the chosen artwork.

What is industrial embroidery?

The quick and simple answer: Industrial embroidery reproduces a logo, image, design or text using an embroidery machine on one or more pieces at a time.

However, you will guess that the process is, nowadays, much more complex and impressive than that!

You must first create an embroidery program, called a matrix. This could be your logo, a slogan, the name of one of your employees, a job title, a design saved in software, an image found and duly paid for on the net… Solid or diversified colors, large or small matrix, only your imagination will impose the limits of embroidery possibilities.

The development of this matrix will determine what are the properties of the embroidery to be performed such as the color, the density of the stitches, the border, the embroidery order, etc., and how the stitching should be done. This matrix will then be recorded on the embroidery machine software so that it can reproduce the program that has been created.

But before starting the embroidery machine, the spools of thread, of which there are different types of quality, will have to be manually threaded on it, depending on the colors that we want to reproduce, which are numerous and varied.

The number of needles that each head of the embroidery machine will have will allow a different color to be threaded on each of them. There are embroidery machines with 4, 6, 10, 12 or even 15 needles. So, the more needles there are, the more colors the matrix can contain. The number of stitches that these needles can produce will vary according to the size and complexity of the artwork, reaching a rate of more than 1000 stitches per minute.

Similarly, there are single-head embroidery machines (which embroider one piece at a time) or multi-head embroidery machines. So, the more heads we have, the more pieces we can embroider simultaneously on a single machine.

Finally, the chosen textile will have to be positioned on the embroidery machine using a frame that will hold it completely in place without the possibility of it being moved during the entire embroidery process.

So, as you have seen, with industrial embroidery, the entire embroidery mass production process gains in speed, efficiency, resistance and replicability. Not to mention that it undoubtedly brings added value to the textiles and clothing chosen by the customer due to its ability to reproduce with great accuracy their requirements and thus meet their expectations.

What can be embroidered specifically?

One of the advantages of opting for industrial embroidery when you own a business or represent an institution is that it allows you to make this business or institution shine with unique designs with a chic and refined effect, whether to the eye or to the touch; it is one of the ideal vectors to enhance brand image.

Embroidery carried out using industrial machines is perfectly suitable for several textiles because of its durability and resistance and to give a raised appearance with an elegant effect to your logo.

Whether it’s cotton, organic cotton, polyester, polycotton, wool, polyamide, bamboo fiber… Whether it’s professional uniforms, outdoor clothing, sportswear, tablecloths and napkins in an event context, simple caps, ready-to-wear… Commercial embroidery is suitable for several uses, and its execution speed is impressive.

But one way or another, to result in a beautiful, precise and clean embroidery, we advise you to always opt for good quality fabrics.

However, there are exceptions relating to the thickness of the fabric, the type of textile used and the size of the characters or details to be embroidered, where commercial embroidery can be very difficult to achieve or could damage the textile in question. Consider that fabrics that are too thin, too soft, elastic (like jersey), PVC-coated clothing that could lose its waterproofing, or very small characters or very fine details for which the rendering will not be optimal, and sometimes even disappointing. But other alternatives are available to you, including heat transfer in some cases.

How is the cost of embroidery calculated when using an industrial embroidery machine?

The cost of industrial embroidery fluctuates according to the size, density and the artwork complexity of the matrix, in addition to the quantity of pieces to be embroidered. Knowing that the speed of the needles can reach more than 1000 stitches per minute, it is therefore the choice of the matrix, once created, that will determine its production time and cost, all depending on the number of stitches that will be necessary to make it. Depending on the matrix chosen, it can require the embroidery machine to perform from a few thousand to tens of thousands of stitches.

In addition to the basic fee for your choice of artwork, you will also be charged for the design of your matrix and the addition of a name to it.

But, interestingly, once the matrix has been created, it can be reused for future orders at no up-front cost, since we'll store your matrix in our software for future production, at your request.

What is heat transfer?

Heat transfer consists of a method of printing and cutting an image, logo or text on vinyl sheets, which will then be applied, with what is called "transfer paper" and using a professional high-temperature press, to a textile or object.

In other words, heat transfer is a technique described as indirect since this technique requires a few production steps before finally printing the artwork on the previously chosen textile or object.

First of all, when the original artwork has several colors, it is printed on a white vinyl sheet that will then be cut electronically or manually; and when the desired artwork has only one color, we simply choose the vinyl sheet whose color exactly matches the chosen image or text and pass it directly to the electronic cutter or cut it manually.

Next, what is called a “transfer paper” will be placed on the vinyl from which we will have previously removed its film. It is at this stage that your image or logo will be ready to be positioned in the desired location on your textile, then permanently transferred onto it using a high-temperature press, which activates the adhesiveness on the back of the vinyl and permanently fixes it to the fabric. It is when the vinyl and the textile are pressed between two heated plates that the sealing occurs.

Vinyl sheets are available in a wide range of colors, textures and effects, and allow photo quality printing on most textiles.

Interestingly, if the selected image or text includes fine details or small characters, if the print job requires a wide variety of colors, or if you wish to integrate 3M reflective material on your textile, then heat transfer will be the ideal option for a faithful rendering of your original artwork. Furthermore, this printing technique is perfectly suited to small print jobs and small numbers of units to be printed.

What are the advantages and inconveniences of heat transfer?

Heat transfer has several advantages, but also some inconveniences that allow us to compare this technique with that of screen printing. Both heat pressing and screen printing techniques offer excellent printing results, but each is suitable for different scenarios. Let's take a closer look.

Advantages of heat transfer

As with screen printing, heat transfer is ideal for printing large-format images or logos, but it also allows you to play with a much greater range of colors. This enables you to print photo quality or color gradations involving a great deal of detail, since it ensures maximum graphic respect for the design selected for printing.

The chosen designs are much easier to print than with screen printing and, although their final renderings are similar, heat-pressing allows us to add virtually unlimited colors, and to work with much more complex artworks. In terms of color schemes, heat transfer is the indisputable choice.

In contrast to industrial embroidery, heat transfer also allows for well-defined printing of small characters and very fine details. Even on the most restricted areas, your text, logo or image can be positioned on virtually any location, thanks to the greater maneuverability it offers in contrast to industrial embroidery and screen printing.

Because it's so quick and easy to setup, heat-pressing can be used to print very small quantities. In fact, there is no minimum quantity of units to order with this technique. Screen printing, on the other hand, is much more efficient and a better alternative when your order involves a large number of units.

In addition, thermal transfer allows you to personalize each piece of the order, by adding a name in addition to the chosen image or logo.

Perfectly suited to most types of fabric, heat transfer can be carried out on a wide range of textiles, from leather to nylon and even neoprene, to name but a few.

Disadvantages of heat transfer

In terms of longevity, screen printing will last longer than heat transfer. Indeed, thermal transfer printing can fade over time. Whereas with screen printing, the ink penetrates the fabric, on the other hand, heat transfer printing remains on the surface of the fabric, as the very thin vinyl sheets stick to the fabric fibers. A slightly stiffer feel can then be observed on the fabric.

That's why we recommend washing thermal transfer-printed garments inside out, avoiding the dryer, and ironing them inside out only. This will help protect the print and extend its lifespan.

So, for a more durable design and, as previously mentioned, for orders involving a large quantity of pieces, screen printing will represent a more interesting and appropriate solution.

How is the cost of heat transfer printing calculated?

The cost of heat transfer printing is calculated according to the size and complexity of the cutting involved, as well as the number of units to be printed added to the graphic design of your artwork. We should also mention that small print and the addition of a name to the original artwork will have an impact on the final cost, as will the addition of 3M reflective material to your textile.

What is screen printing?

Screen printing originated in China thousands of years ago, making it one of the oldest printing methods. Over time, screen printing has been refined and perfected to become the modern method we know today, and the most frequently used textile printing technique. From the Latin sericum (silk) and the Greek graphein (writing), screen printing is a printing technique that originally used screens made out of silk fabric.

Today, this technique uses stencils, which we call screens or frames, that are inserted between the ink and the chosen support. By support, we mean a sheet of paper, textile (cotton, nylon, polyester...), cardboard, a wooden board... Even plastic (PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, ABS...), metal, ceramics and glass can support screen printing. In short, it's a versatile technique that can be used to print on virtually any flat surface.

An aluminum frame acts as a screen, and using a squeegee, the ink is pushed through the stencil bearing the image to be printed. Thus, one color at a time, each with a distinct frame, the ink is distributed evenly, passing through the pores of the screen that remain open and transferring onto the previously selected substrate. This is how the artwork or logo is created.

Finally, to ensure that the ink is deeply and permanently impregnated into the selected substrate, the freshly-printed substrate is then passed through a high-temperature curing tunnel (an “oven”), where the ink and substrate become one and the same, thus ensuring a significantly longer lifespan than with heat transfer.

How does screen printing distinguish itself from other printing techniques?

The most common textile printing technique, screen printing is ideal for printing large-format images or logos, combining vivid colors with accurate rendering of the original artwork. From the first to the last piece printed, colors will be vibrant and consistent.

However, it's important to know that screen printing is suitable for simple images or logos with few colors. Unlike heat transfer, we can print up to a maximum of 6 colors.

In contrast to heat transfer, which allows for color gradations involving great detail, this method doesn't allow you to play with a wide range of colors. With screen printing, colors are instead applied one alongside the other.

Although there are techniques (film) that can be used to produce color gradients, proceeding via screen printing to achieve this is far too expensive. Even for a single-color gradient, it can require the use of numerous frames, resulting in long and costly production times. That's why we strongly recommend heat transfer when you want to incorporate a wide range of colors or gradations into the print, at a much more reasonable cost but with a rendering that's just as accurate to your original design.

Nevertheless, if you're looking for high-volume printing, high-quality rendering and greater durability, then screen printing would be the best printing technique for you to consider.

In fact, screen printing is a superior marking method which, unlike heat transfer, lasts even after numerous wash cycles. This is because, with this method, the ink penetrates deep into the textile fibers. So, unlike heat transfer, screen-printed ink will leave the fabric soft as opposed to slightly stiffened.

It should also be noted that screen printing involves fixed costs, given the considerable complexity involved in setting it up, making it less suitable for printing small quantities than heat transfer. This printing technique requires each color to be processed in a different frame, which explains its relatively long set-up times.

But, for a variety of fabric types (cotton, nylon, polyester, lycra, spandex, etc.), screen printing is an option that offers durability and excellent cost-effectiveness for printing large quantities.

How is the cost of screen printing calculated?

The cost of screen printing is calculated based on the number of colors to be printed and varies depending on the quantity of items to be printed.

Please bear in mind that screen printing starts at 12 units, but they don't have to be identical. In fact, you could vary the items to be printed. For example, you could have as many T-shirts as long-sleeved shirts printed in a single order, but with the same artwork.

We should also point out that the design of the frame and film per color and per order involves fixed costs to be added to the printing costs, as does the graphic design of the chosen artwork.

Large format display: What is it and why choose this printing service?

By choosing Prefair, you can make your company or the institution you represent stand out and effectively convey your brand image in a number of ways by opting for different personalization techniques: with the high quality finish, precision and permanent results of laser engraving; with the unique motifs with the elegant, chic and refined effect of industrial embroidery; with the play of colors, their almost infinite nuances and the photo quality of hot transfer; with the superior quality, vibrant colors and great durability of screen printing.

Each of these techniques for personalizing garments or promotional objects is unique and meets a wide variety of needs. However, they can only be used on well-defined surfaces, do not allow for oversized displays and can therefore limit your artwork communication efforts to the general public. This is where large-format displays come into play!

Printing oversized letters several feet high? Directional signs in your building or in a public place? Self-adhesive pictograms for floor-level directions to the office or bathroom? Large posters and banners to stand out at sporting or corporate events? Lettering or window dressing to show your colors? Banners for construction site fences? Lettering or wrapping of all types of vehicles, from cars to trucks to cranes, to get your logo and slogan across? Giant maps to provide directions to your citizens? Signposting for everyone's safety?

Here at Prefair, it's all possible, and that's just a small part of what we have to offer you!

As you can see, there are many different types of large-format displays, all suited to meet your specific needs. By opting for this printing service, you can optimize your visibility and stand out of the crowd by choosing a unique graphic design and making it visible to as many people as possible!

Technically, what do you have to offer us?

In the large-format display segment, a wide range of materials, products and styles can be used. However, one or other of these materials and the adhesion of the vinyls used will be preferable to the others, as they will have to withstand the environmental conditions in which they will be displayed.

In any case, we use high-quality materials, strong rigid and flexible substrates, and the painting, printing, cutting, grommeting, reinforcing and gluing of your display products will be carried out without compromise, so that your artwork communication is clear, sharp and vivid.

We'll print your original artwork on different surfaces, depending on your needs, the environment in which it will be displayed and the context in which you wish to use it. We'll also offer to install your display for you.

Coroplast, alupanel, vinyl-coated polyester for banners, self-adhesive vinyl, cardboard... So many possibilities for so many different uses.

Coroplast

Coroplast is a corrugated polypropylene plastic sheet. Economical, lightweight, versatile and washable, it is resistant to the elements, humidity, water, most solvents, rodents, grease and oil. It's ideal for indoor and outdoor signage, promotional accessories and traffic signs, not to mention a variety of other uses.

Alupanel

Alupanel can simply be described as aluminum composite. Composed of aluminum foil on the surface and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sandwiched in the middle, this material is a sandwich-like structure.

Thermally bonded together, these elements cannot be separated, making it a lightweight, rigid, durable and resistant substrate.

Much lighter than aluminum, alupanel is easy to transport, install and fasten to various types of support. It's also a durable material because it's dimensionally stable, waterproof and sturdy.

Easy to maintain, it is particularly resistant to the elements, UV rays, corrosion and erosion, as well as being stainless, rot-proof and impact-resistant, not to mention fingerprint-resistant.

With its smooth, flat surface that can be printed on both sides of the sheet, alupanel offers a high-end design, making it an ideal material for digital printing. The end result is brilliant colors and a perfect finish.

Ideal for fascia banners, signs, long-term signage and much more, the alupanel sheets we have to offer are available in a wide range of colors, with a glossy or matte surface.

Vinyl-coated polyester banner

Vinyl-coated polyester banners are ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Affordable and water- and weather-resistant, you can choose this option to create temporary signs, as well as to give yourself great visibility at corporate and sporting events, exhibitions, or even on the edge of a construction site. From one event to the next, you'll be able to reuse your banner, since it can easily be moved from one location to another. The banner's high-quality vinyl coating resists UV rays and tearing.

Self-adhesive vinyl

Cut to your specifications and in a variety of sizes, self-adhesive vinyl is suitable for a ton of uses: floor stickers, vehicle lettering and wrapping, window and display lettering and wrapping (solid or perforated vinyl), decorations, wall decals, lettering of all kinds and sizes, removable or permanent.

Self-adhesive window film (interior and exterior)

Self-adhesive window film is the ideal way to make your shop or office more appealing to the public. With an original, eye-catching image in bright colors, you can grab your customers' attention and show your company's personality in an instant. Easy to apply and remove, the self-adhesive vinyl used will resist UV rays and weather conditions if laminated, improving the appearance of your facade in no time.

Self-adhesive perforated window film (interior and exterior)

Self-adhesive perforated window film meets the same needs as non-perforated film, but with the added benefit of allowing you to see from the inside out, while having your choice of printed artwork visible to your customers. It also gives you a clear view of the exterior. A great option for displaying your colors while enjoying the natural light that will penetrate inside your business premises. Protected against UV rays and the elements, this vinyl lamination option will dress your windows and display cabinets for years to come.

Floor stickers

Whether it's to add a decorative touch to any space, or for more informative use, floor stickers are perfect for both indoors and outdoors. Would you like to show the way to the bathroom or to different offices? Need to define parking areas? Clearly and visibly mark safety zones? Then a floor sticker is an excellent option for you.

The instructions will be easily understood by everyone, and the stickers will add a touch of color to the space in which you install them. Permanent or removable, with or without non-slip lamination, your stickers will withstand the test of time, even in high-traffic areas.

Tailored to meet every need and taste, you can choose from a wide range of sizes, shapes, models and colors. Or would you rather create your own personalized design? No problem, the possibilities are almost limitless!

Vehicle lettering & wrapping

Cars, vans, trucks, trailers, cranes... If you want your vehicle to be an effective advertising tool that goes everywhere, no matter where you go, Prefair offers you that visibility, since our production workshop enables us to letter and dress vehicles large and small. With a choice of original visuals, whether in bright or more discreet colors, you won't go unnoticed on your travels.

In addition to our top-quality vinyls, a laminating film will be applied over them, providing extra protection against scratches and UV rays, as well as durability for years to come.
